June 14-15 ER Visit

June 14-15 ER Visit

Levi's counts this morning were great! We spent the evening hanging with and playing with family after a death in the family yesterday had everyone together. RIP Grammie Rita, you will be missed and loved.

Around 9:00 we headed home for bed as Levi was getting overwhelmed and over tired. It was a late bedtime but he was in bed and asleep around 9:45. Jay and I hung out and relaxed a little before heading to bed around 10:30. I was reading my book in bed and getting ready to fall asleep, when Levi started screaming. Not the typical, I woke up and need you Mommy scream, or even the I had a nightmare scream, but a blood curdling huge amounts of pain scream. Jay and I went running into his room and he is in his bed shaking his legs and rubbing them back apart and screaming "it hurts" and just screaming. We got him out of his bed and I was holding him and he is just still shaking and rubbing his leg and pulling it up and down like he can't stop. I bring him into our room which has the light on and pull off his pants to see if there is anything on his leg. And this bruise is what we find:
There was no bruise there when I helped him put his PJs on an hour ago. Jay and I both looked at each other and were freaked out. With what we have been going thru the past week we quickly decided this warranted an ER trip in case it was a blood clot, or other major issue.

Jay and I quickly got dressed and got an ice pack and slippers for Levi, grabbed Levi's tablet, and were in the car within a minute or two. Levi was confused what we were doing and very uncomfortable in the car, but we drove quickly to the ER.

We got to the hospital and there was a little bit of wait as there always is at the hospital. Levi did a decent job waiting. He played some games on Jay's phone and set on the floor playing with the toys.
Once the "kids" room (it has horses on the wall and some other funner looking things) opened they got us out back. Levi was definitely very tired but also a little unsure about what was going on, so he cuddled up on the bed.
Jay, Levi, and Bear spent a bunch of time reading the kids pamphlets. Levi liked looking at them and talking about the stuff he knew all about.
The doctor came in and we talked about what the options were and what could have caused this. For the most part the doctor didn't seem to have a clue what the possible cause was. He ordered labs and was getting in touch with Levi's doctors at DHMC.

The lab tech who came in was great with Levi. The lab tech was a little uncertain about sticking him again because he clearly had a mark/bruise from this morning, but the draw went fairly well. Levi was upset however that he only had plain boring band-aids. The lab tech was so good that he walked all the way to the outpatient lab and got Levi another Gecko band-aid and brought it back down and changed his band-aid for him. It was a great moment for Levi and very sweet of the tech.

Levi was getting antsy, but also very tired, so we pulled out his tablet to allow him to settle down a little and hope that he would fall asleep.
When that wasn't working we tried to cuddle with him to see if he would sleep that way. But that didn't work either, it just seemed to make him angry!
The doctor came back in with his lab results. His platelet count was 371, so had actually increased since this morning. They also ran tests to test for muscle death or other blood clot issues/proteins that can build up and those all came back negative so there seemed to be no reason for this.

They were still waiting to hear from DHMC again after counts came back to see what DHMC wanted them to do.

Levi was getting crazy and playing in the curtains of the room.
Bear was also being silly!
We wanted to settle him down, so we put a movie on his tablet and had him cuddle in the bed. He didn't fall asleep, but he did at least settle in the bed and relax.

After a little bit the doctor came back in and he and Dr. C had talked and neither had any reason for why this had happened but at this point both felt that there was no reason to keep Levi. He should go home and get some sleep but if anything else popped up then we were to return immediately and to call Dr. C tomorrow to follow up.

It was a long night as we got home around 3:30am, but I wouldn't change the decision to go to the hospital for anything. It could have been something serious. Random bruises like that don't just appear on a kid for no reason.

We let Levi sleep in as late as he wanted in the morning. Jay called Dr. C and the nurses and they talked about all that had happened, and what their thoughts were. No one really had an idea of what could have caused this and stated that we should continue life as planned and just watch it, so we decided to take Levi to school, but did tell his teachers what had gone on.

I picked Levi up from school around 4:30 and Dr. C called me again around 5 to see how things were going. She was very stumped about this one and didn't understand it, but was very glad that we were on top of things and had immediately gotten him to the ER.

He never complained about his leg hurting again, and the even weirder part of all this was that by Saturday afternoon the bruise was completely gone. It had gone from not there at all, to dark, to black, to fading, to completely gone in 40 hours! That alone is strange as Levi's bruises last 2-3 weeks usually.

This was a scary night, but I am glad that we got him checked out. Hopefully something like this never happens again! And on another note we made it 4 years before a middle of the night ER visit, or actually any ER visit, and for a sick child that is a pretty darn good run!
